Our cutting-edge structural maintenance, repair and rehabilitation services prolong the lifecycle of your infrastructure assets. These include buildings, silos, cooling towers and reservoirs, as well as stacks and towers. We continue to work with leading heavy industrial and commercial engineering companies to prolong their infrastructure assets. Over the years, we have refined and honed our ability to undertake these technically complex projects in high-risk environments. This remains one of our key strengths and a strategic competitive edge.
Our structural maintenance, repair and rehabilitation services include periodic inspections and baseline assessments. This is in addition to repair design, project realisation and planning and follow-up assessments.
LNW Consulting Engineers and Project Managers’ skilled and experienced team undertakes periodic and annual inspections of structures to certify their structural integrity. This is in line with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety, as well as Mine Health and Safety Acts. Refer to https://www.gov.za/documents/occupational-health-and-safetyact and https://www.gov.za/documents/mine-health-and-safety-act. As part of this service, we develop a long-term maintenance repair programme for our clients. It includes identifying and isolating areas that require critical intervention and those that can be staggered. This enables clients to better plan and budget for repairs.
We then undertake comprehensive baseline assessments of severely compromised infrastructure assets. To determine the possibility and feasibility of rehabilitating structures, we use a host of engineering tools. They include functional, structural mechanics, thermal, fatigue or failure, failure root cause, repair probability and remaining lifecycle analysis. We record and geographically map all structural anomalies, including cracks, as well as signs of spalling, leaching and erosion, for future reference. Moreover, we three-dimensionally and thermally scan the structures using drones and high-definition photography. We also undertake in-situ carbonation testing and core drilling for sampling and laboratory analysis. This is in addition to half-cell potential measurements, ultrasonic scanning and rebound hammer testing. Notably, we focus on the functional purpose of the structure. Particular emphasis is placed on duty cycles and natural frequencies. This is in addition to understanding the behaviour of typical atmospheric conditions on the structure, as well as previous maintenance and repair cycles.
Our focus is on delivering quality structural maintenance, repair and rehabilitation services. Certainly, this is also demonstrated by our long-term repair solutions that save clients significantly in operating costs. These are motivated in our baseline case assessment report. It includes a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the compromised structure. We compare this to the FEA of the proposed repaired structure. The rich information garnered during our baseline case assessments enables us to suggest the best repair solutions. We also include a selection of materials for each repair method. This will ensure the long-term structuralintegrity of infrastructure assets. Our design will incorporate a repair method statement, as well as repair and material specifications. This is in addition to capital requirements and details of the planned repair programmes. We undertake the development and implementation of the repair programme on a typical brownfield project-management basis. Therefore, we serve as a consultant engineering team or as part of a client owners team. This responsibility includes procurement and detailed project planning. Notably, we insist on back-to-back guarantees of at least 10 years from suppliers of repair materials. Under a traditional contracting arrangement, repair contractors can only be held liable for the quality of workmanship for a year. This novel approach, therefore, ensures longevity of the repairs. Our team of engineers and technologists also monitors them on an annual basis.
We also harness our combined 40 years concrete maintenance, repair and rehabilitation experience to extend the lifecycle of infrastructure assets. This includes silo-storage and
cooling facilities, as well as reservoirs, concrete dams and any industrial type of facilities. We have been developing this capability for more than 20 years to provide clients with a feasible alternative to replacing this costly infrastructure. Our service is complemented by our skills and experience in building technically complex structures, including mass storage
and cooling facilities. This enables us to provide a comprehensive engineering solution to our industrial and engineering clients. We are well known to our clients for working hand-in-hand with their maintenance managers to design and scope repair works, no matter how technically challenging. LNW Consulting Engineers and Project Managers provides a full 360-degree project solution that
keeps our clients’ assets safe and in service for the foreseeable future.
